The new ferry steamer Colleen made a trial trip from Dunedin to Port Chalmers (call ing at the different landing-places on the Peninsula) on Monday, and it is a matter of pleasure to report that she quite maintains the reputation expected of her. She steams well, her machinery works smoothly and altogether she is a most suitable boat for the work it is intended she shall perform. She comes down the harbour in charge of our old friend Captain Fraser (formerly of the Wauganui and Oreti), while the engines were under the superintendence of Mr Hamilton, engineer of the s.s. Oreti. Amongst the gentlemen who took the opportunity of witnessing her maiden performances were Messrs J. Smith, W. J. M. Larnach, Guthrie, MacDermott, and others, while Messrs Crawford (Government inspector of i machinery) ana Sparrow were also on board. The little boat is exceedingly well put together, and will, we are informed, carry about 300 passengers. She has, for her size, a spacious hurricane deck, and descending from this we reach the main deck, on which there is also considerable space. The comfort of passengers has been studied by giving her two very excellent cabins, each about 16 feet long by 14 feet wide. These compartments are neatly decorated and comfortably furnished; tables are placed in the centre of each; while the settees and couches, which take up cither side, are covered in crimson velvet. The engine-room is a model of perfection, and contains one of Denny's high-pressure, surface-condensing, diagonal engines, with a 14-inch cylinder and 2-feet stroke. This piece of machinery is the first of its kind ever seen in the Colonies. Steam is supplied by a steel boiler 6 feet 6 inches in length, and 6 feet in diameter, the plates being three-eighths of an inch in thickness, and doubly riveted. The working pressure is estimated at 80 pounds to the square inch. The expenditure of coal is estimated not to exceed lewt per hour ; and with this quantity of coal yesterday she attained a speed of over nine and a-half knots per hour. Her ordinary speed is, we are informed, estimated at nine knots an hour. The Colleen has been put together in her entirety by Messrs Sparrow and Co., of Dunedin, who have spared no pains in order to turn out the boat in a creditable manner ; and it is very satisfactory to record that Mr Crawford, Government inspector of machinery, is perfectly satisfied with her performances. The engines work well and smoothly, and the little vessel will, we hope, prove a source of remuneration to her spirited owners She left Dunedin at 0.12 p.m. yesterday, and steamed down the harbour, calling at Macandrow and Broad Bays and Portobello ; thence she ran across to Port Chalmers, where she was visited by numbers of persons, and finally returned to Dunedin.
