A MIGHTY BIG WALK
Sergeant Baker, of Montreal, has undertaken for a substantial Avager to coA r er 85,000 miles m six years, and" at the beginning of May had tramped as far as Vancouver, B.C. He is described m tho newspapers of that city as " short, but stoutly built; weather stained, but ,a picture of glowing health." In June, 1910, ho entered into an agreement to walk these 85,000 miles iv the time specified, and if he fulfils his contract he is to receive £57,000. Other conditions are that he shall live throughout the six years on a vegetarian diet, with the exception that he may take eggs; and he is to earn his living meanwhile by lectures. When ho started he Avas accompanied by two companions, one of whom has since died, while the other dropped out of the venture, so that Baker is now entirely on "his own." Baker has so far visited' the capital of every State m America, and the capital of every province m Canada, north of the 49th parallel. Tho Vancouver 'World' save: — All through he has maintained the terms of the contract with the utmost fidelity, and medical practitioners who have recently examined him pronounce him to be a wonderful specimen of physical excellence. Up to the time of reaching Seattle he carried a pack Aveighing 35 pounds, and he made an average distance of 39 miles daily. At Seattle, thinking' he might have some trouble m bringing his pack across the line, he decided to leave it there, and he will call for it later on. His papers have been vised m every city he has visited. On one occasion, through being Avrongly directed, he Avent a few miles out o*T his way, but he ha 3 not counted those%ost miles m his itinerary. All that remains for him to do now is to get back to Montreal and collect his reward.
