A strong committee has beon formed, and it has beon decided to mark tho close of the season by giving 1 a dauca which will bo memorable as the most enjoyable of the wholo series. The choir of tho Paeroa Presbyterian Church has decided to repeat the anniversary hymns next Sunday. Mr E. E Evans conducts the morning service, aud the evening service is supplied. Duriug the- evening service the Misses Evans will sing a duot. Tho Methodist Church in Now Zealand has set Sunday apart as Home Mission Sunday, .all the offerings that day being given for the support of the missions. The Rev. W. H. Beck, of Cambridge, has been appointed deputation to this district, and will preach at Paeroa in the morning and afc Karaug-ahake in the afternoon. Tho Rev. G..Snaddon will conduct the evening sorvieo afc Paeroa, when ha will give an address ou "Doubt." During tho service Mr W. Hcapo will sing " And lie Shall Feed His Flock " (lfaudel).

A man in custody, while being brought along in tho train yesterday, made a bold bid for liberty. The train at the time was between Mercer and Whangamarino, and tho prisoner and the constable wore making their way through the train to the refreshment car. While on the platform of ono of tho carriagos the prisoner gave the constable the slip and jumped off the train. He could hardly hope to escape, as the whole of the country round thore, with the exception of the railway line, is practically under water. He was recaptured, when it was found he had sustained injuries to his shoulder.

Mr Porritt appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Moresby for the defendant. Defendant's story was that Towers was to do the whole of the house—inside and out (three coats)-for £18 12s. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate gavfl judgment for plaintiff for £19 0s 9d, the defendant being also ordered to pay £4 10s 8d costs.

In fighting a bad influenza epidemic among the Taranaki Maoris, Dr PomuvQ, Health Officer tq this people, has not had-much assistance from the Nalivos (says Tho Dominion). The Maori is a light-hearted child of Nature, who doos not trouble till it troubles him with great ■ severity. Influenza, followed by pneumonia, has been troubling him to death in many cases air&long the west coast of this island, and still tho Health Officer finds it hard to convince other Maoris that influenza is an enemy to bo respected. When a Native, gripped by the complaint aud hot with" fever, rushes into the sea or nearest river for relief, the end is as sure as that of drowning. Yet this has happened in a great many oases. One youthful, stalwart fellow in Taranski, who was prostrated by the disease, was told by Dr Pomare that if he went outside the wharehe would meet his death. He promised not to go outside, but the next day, a frosty morning, found him out in the cold, air..- He died the following day.
