DREADFUL FIRE AT SWELLENDAM, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. GREAT DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY.
On Wednesday, the 17th of May last, a fire" 1 broke out at Mr Reitz's bouse, and in a fevf minutes all the adjoining premises were in a blaze. It bad been blowing a tiemendous gale the whole of the day. The following' properties were burnt: — Benzies and Philip Brothers' dwelling-house and stores, some furniture eared; J. D. K. Retiz's office and house, a little sated; S. B. Lombard's house, scarcely anj thing saved Mrs. Allman'g lodging-house, scarcely anything saved ; Mr. Slome's shop, all burnt ; Mrs. Eks'een's lodging-house, all burnt; Mr. Standerwick's, a little saved, the atable pulled^ down to prevent the fire going farther down the street on that side, and at 4 p.m. it bad not spread to the next. At the 'back of these are several small houses, all burnt. Here it began at Murray's bake-house on the opposite eide of the Street. Of Pyke and Byle's printing-office, nothing saved ; of R. R. B. Hopiey's, a little sated; of the bank, the books and cash saved ; the Weeleyan Chapel, all burnt; Rev. Mr. Barber's dwelling, little saved; Mr. Staal'?, the telegraph office, nothing saved; the public offices, nothing saved ; Mr. Eannemeyer » fuiniture and new waggons burnt; Mi. Hablutzel's, little saved. 1 Here it seeroe to have stopped. The properties are insured in Cape Town office* to the amount of about £12.000; namely, in the Protecteur, £5000 ; the Equitable, £3000; the South African, £2500; and the Commercial, £1500.
