GERMAN-MADE CIGARS.
FACTORIES IN MANILA.
AX INTERESTING LIST.
Considerable interest is being taken in Australia in regard to the question of preventing the importation of enemy goods that might otherwise enter under an apparently neutral name. The Melbourne Argus last week drew the attention of the Federal Minister for Customs to a paragraph in the China Mail, published at Hongkong, containing a statement from the general manager of the La Minerva Cigar Factory, Manila. The Minister replied that the information had already been noted lag,- the office, and stops had been taken to prevent the importation of cigars manufactured by German firms in Manila., The news from Manila will bo of equal interest to importers and consumers in New Zealand, as every effort is being made here to prevent enemy goods filtering through. The statement in question is as follows: —"The following is a list of cigar factories in Mahila owned or controlled by Germans directly and by German interests: La Perla del Oriente, Alhambra, La Flou de Jntal, Helios, Tebana, and La Praeba. The proprietor of La Perla del Orients is C. Ingenohl, living in Rotterdam, and a naturalised Belgian citizen. He is a brother of Admiral Ingenohl, who was lately chief admiral of the German grand fleet The manager, assistant manager, and European employees of La Perla del Oriente are all Germans. C. Ingenohl is also proprietor of the Hongkong Tobacco Manufactory, Hongkong. All supplies for La Perla del Oriente cigar factory are imported from Germany, even tne office supplies. The Alhambra and La Flou de Intal factories are owned by Krenzle and Streifr, Ltd., a German and Swiss concern, but both are under direct _ German management. Th© Helios factory is owned bv German and Co., Ltd., a German firm, and the white staff is exclusively German. The Yebrana factory is owned by the' Manila Commercial Company, which is a German concern, and is managed by Germans.
