OBITUARY.
LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JAMES PIRIE, V.D.
The death occurred yesterday morning atf bis residence, Sarnia Lodge, Parnell, of
Lieutenant-Colonel James Pirie, V.D., who was in his 81st year. Ho was for* merly major and adjutant of the Ist Regi« ment of the Royal Guernsey Militia* After his arrival in New Zealand in 1879, the late officer was actively connected with! volunteer and Defence matters, holding at one time the appointment of instruct tor in musketry and inspector of anununi-' tion. Colonel Pirie was also for some/ years a member of the Officers' Examination Board, and retired from active military work only a few years ago. Colonel Pirie was formerly prominent in musical and Masonic circles, and was also, until/ quite recently, a regular player on Anck-* land bowling greens- Before coming to! New Zealand, lie was a very successful; rifle shot, and held many valuable trophies won in England and the Channel Islands.: Colonel Pirie married the eldest 1 daughter of the late Mr. John Carey, Lord off the Manor of Sainte Helene, Guernsey, who, with two sons and two daughters, survive him. The eldest son, Mr. Carey J. Pirie, is now in China, and the second' son, Mr. Cecil W. Pirie, is in the service/ of the Union Steam Ship Company. The! eldest daughter, Mrs. Cook, . resides in' Sydney, and the second, Mrs. E. Phillipi Turner, in Wellington. Tho interment) will be at St. Mark's cemetery, Remuera,, to-morrow afternoon.
