THE WORSHIP OF DICKENS

In explaining the fppeai on behalf of Dickens's grand-daughters, the Daily Telegraph says: On the death of Mr. Charles Dickens, jun., his wife and five unmarried daughters were, through no fault of the husband, left absolutely .penniless. The wife was granted a Government pension of £100 a year, and after her death, which occurred three years ago, it was continued to four of the children, in the proportion of £25 a year each. Miss Ethel Dickens has ior some time found it difficult to carry on her typewriting office owing to the incessant and harassing toil necessary to secure a living. There is no doubt, she explains, that the circumstances in which she and her sisters find themselves are 'necessitous.' '' They none of them complained as long as there* was no chance of help from any quarter. Indeed, they had determined to mako the best of a bad job. But now that a definite opportunity of pecuniary assistance is offered, -they do not desire to throw it away through any foolish pride or any reluctance to make the sad circumstances known. It is, therefore, on behalf of these five daughters of Charles Dickens, jun., and grandchildren of the Charles Dickens whom we know and love, that we venture to make an appeal to all those who, wo feel sure, now that the facts are disclosed, will only be too ready to remove from all the English-speaking race a real and painful reproach."
