FENCING FOR LADIES.
Fencing for ladies is rapidly growing more fashionable in London. Every day at the smart fencing schools one meets no end of ; well-known people. The King has always been devoted to this graceful accomplish- I ment. So highly does he think of it that all I his daughters have received instruction from I well-known professors. Now thai the doc- j tors have ordered gymnasium and other hy- ] gienic exercises for men, as well as for women, the schools are crowded every day. ! Undoubtedly the best lady fencer in l.on- j don is still Miss Toupee Lowther, who in a ! special article in the European edition of j the Herald about a. year ago was described I as the lady champion of England. She has I on more than one occasion given an exhibi- j tion of her skill before the King and Queen, j and they both expressed themselves as de- I j lighted with her performance. j Lady Colin Campbell Mas for many years j a singularly adept fencer. Of late years she j lias rather given it up. Mrs. Arthur Cado- j Kan, sister-in-law of the Lord Lieutenant of | ! Ireland, is now reckoned second best to Miss | Lowther. She has gone through a regular | | training, with the happiest results. Lady j j Juliet Lowther, the tall, handsome daughter of Lady de Grey, may also be numbered in ! | the ranks of the fair swordswomen. She is j | considered by experts to be a most promis- I ing pupil. Lady Helen Grimston, daughter of Lord ' j verulam. has also during.the last few years I | taken fencing up as an amusement, and with- : I out being very extraordinary she is reckoned : j very good. Lord Dartmouth has a daue.h- j j tor, Lady Joan Leggc, who for manv months ! j went in for a course of instruction at Me- ' ! ITierson.'s school, in Sloane-street. This is, j j perhaps, (he smartest place in London. I ■ Lady Crosslcy, Miss Saloon. Lady Aldra j I Aches,m, daughter of Lord and Lady CosI ford, and many other well-known ladies are j ! the latest recruits for the fascinating pas- j j time. ° l
