THE JUBILEE STEAMSHIP COMPANY.
TO THK KDITOR. Sir, —I hope, for the honour of Auckland, that we shall have no exhibition of any feeling of intolerance towards the new shipping company starting in our midst. Tho wisdom shown by the Seamen's Union in making the demands they did of the Northern Company, and in starting an opposition line ot boats, is quite open to question, but that has nothing whatever to do with their right to embark in the business on their own account. A correspondent, writing to you on the snbjeot some short time ago, made use of the term " rebellious servants." Such terms are both narrowminded and foolish. The Seamen's Union are capitalises, and in the present case are acting as such, anil while it is every man's business to enoourage them or not, as he likes, no one has the right to say that they are doing anything beyond the legitimate province of capitalists. The necessity that exists for workmen to have some share iu the business creator than merely drawing a weekly wage has long been admitted. The undertaking before us 18 an attempt to solve the question, and though most people are probably of my ojjiuion, that the men will not be able to
secure for themselves the advantages they demanded of the Northern S.S. Co.. they are clearly entitled to use every legitimate means to do so.—l am, bo., Faibplay.
