Anzac Afar: In Memoriam.
(From "The Cacolet.") Only a,mem'ry of bloodstained sands, Of scrub-clad cliffs and fire-drenched lands, Of grim night watches, terse commands; Only a in em'ry of vanished hands. Only a mem'ry of death-hung roads. Of ghostly gullies, drear forebodes, Of solemn footfalls, ghastly loads; Only a mem'ry of nobler codes. Only a mem'ry of screaming shell, Of charging shock, of onslaught fell, Of haloes snatched from flames of hell; Only a mem'ry of tasks done well. Only a mem'ry of plaintless pain, Of hunger of heart, of mouth, of brain,
Of self-loss borne for selfless gain; Only a mem'ry of prayer again. Only a mem'ry of graves rough-drest, Of silent files where sleep our best, Of Angel-ward o'er heroes rest: Only a mem'ry of souls gone West. Only a mem'ry—yet short its day, It has raised a shrine on .an Empire's way, It.has rung forth fame in a grand "Aye"; Only a mem'ry to live for "Aye." —"Brentomnan." Palestine, 1917.
