APPEAL- TO SMOlvEAid AND I OTHERS. A fund has been started at the "Ev6Ziing Alail" Office for supplying tobacco to the troops at the front. Jiv means of this fund those who desire to do so. will be ;tW u send gilts to those at the front with a miilfntum of trouble. Each 6d parcel will contain 2ozs. o 1 tobacco and 30 ".Kitchener ' cigarettes. If bought in the ordinary way for use in Englandi this panvj would cost Is 6d. Thifl saving of Is on every parcel is due to the Customs having waived the duty, and also to the War Office having undertaken. to doliver these shipfree to tlio soldiers. By making the contributions in ■way the donor gets more for his mqney and the soldier ever so much more for his pipe. Each packet goes as a personal gift,. The name a nd address of tho donor are attached to every packet he or she sends. Further, donors can, if they wish, select liny soldier of fiiilor as the recipient of their pickets. A £5 note will make 200 niffi -*t the front happy for a week, and smoking is the only pleasure they got. It is stated that the best plan is to keep on making at least one "Tommy" happy by sending him oiifj more packets a week until the end of tho war. /These funds have been in operation at Home for some time. On 19th October. 1914, the editor of the "Weekly Dispatch"' 1 received the following dictated by Lord Jlobei tfi: — Dear Sir, —1 am- directed by FieldMarshal Lord Roberts to say he is very, glad to learn that the readers of" "The "Weekly Dispatch" have at ready subscribed the sum of £5524 to the fund you have organised for /supplying' our troops at the front with tobacco and cigarettes, and that he hopes the fund will be equally well supported m future. —Yours faithfullv, (Signed) I-lAROLD S.
