FRANKLIN BY-ELECTION
CRUSHING MAJORITY.
NEARLY THREE TO ONE
PUKEWOHE, This Day,
The by-election for the Franklin seat, rendered vacant by the death of the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, resulted yesterday in an overwhelming ma jority for Mr. Ewan Donald McLennan, the Reform candidate, over the Labour representative, Mr. John Sommerville Montgomerie. With four small returns awaited the respective figures are as follows: McLENNAN 5847 .MONTGOMERIE 2252 Reform Majority 3595 Polling was particularly brisk at practically all the booths during the whole period of nine hours (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) in which they were open, the aggregate registration of about 8200 votes representing over four-fifths of the electors.

Commenting on the result of the [Franklin by-eleetion the Liberal Leader, Mr. T. M. Wilford said: "The Franklin Tesult has proved what every Liberal elector knows, namely, that the followers of Karl Marx cannot •disguise themselves wi'th the mantles of Ballance and Sieddon. The result «hows that constitutional authority, when challenged, receives the support of Reformers and Liberals alike."
