WARTIME THEFT

NATHUSIUS SENTENCED.

YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT,

RE-TRIAL GAXTED

(Received J1 a.m.) LONDON, November 21. Advices from Lille state that General Nathusius has been re-tried by CourtMartial, which sentenced him to a

year's imprisonment and ordered him to pay the costs of the prosecution. Large crowds were unable, to gain admittance to the Courthouse. General Nathusius immediately demanded a re-trial, which was granted forthwith.

Accused strenuously denied his guilt. He stated that he merely had, a carpet removed because it was full of fleas.

The principal witness, caretaker of the chateau where General Nathusius stayed during wartime, declared that articles of furniture and persotial attire were missed when General Nathusius left.

Counsel for the defence argued that the case had not been proved, while an adverse verdict was likely to react in Germany on the> eve of the elections.

The Court deliberated for an hour and gave its verdict by a. majority of four votes to three. —Router.

"FARCICAL TRIAL."

GERMAN INDIGNATION,

(Received 1 p.m.)

BERLIN, November 21

The whole Press is indignant at the sentence on General Nathusi.us. The trial is described as a farce and the sentence as an infamous act of vengeance. Even the moderate "Tageblatt" is angry and says: " Unless the sentence is promptly quashed it will be an incredible disgrace for French democracy and the Herriot Cabinet." The Nationalist papers demand German reprisals. Undoubtedly the German Government will take further action, especially as the verdict will be good election propaganda for the Nationalists ogainst the policy of conciliation with France. —Reuter.

It was reported by cable from Frankfurt last week that the Public Prosecutor of Germany stated that he proceedings against General Nathusius, accuscd of stealing furniture, were based on a section of German law relating to war criminals, under which the Public Prosecutor is obliged to proceed against any German accused of offences against any person or any property outside Germany.
