THE LATE MR MOODY.
A PIONEER MINER,
The late Mr T. P. Moody, whose, death was recorded yesterday, was born at Killingworth, Westmore, in Northumberland, on April 14, 1841. He served his apprenticeship at Cyfarthfa, Mertbyr Tydvil, in South Wales, under his father, Mr John Moody, who was managing extensive coal fields belonging to the Crawßhay family. In the year 1864 he arrived in New Zealand where, with his uncle, Mr R. W. Moody, he started an engineering business in Wellesley street, Auckland. About 1868 he left for New South Wales and' was appointed assistant manager of the Waratah Coal Co. From there he went to Brisbane to manage Capt. Towns' meat preserving works. turned to New Zealand where he was appointed general manager of the Bay of Islands Coal C 0..: He remained there 16 years. On leaving that company Mr Moody devoted the whole of his attention to opening up the Hikurangi coalfield with which he was very familiar, having been the first
to bore an_; prove the value of the field. His reports on the subject greatly influenced the Government inextending the-railway- to Hikurangi. That he was right in his estimate of the Hikurangi coal measures results have proved. As an authority on coal Mr Moody stood pre-eminent. As a master he was greatly esteemed by the miners, and a commendable display of esprit de corps always marked the relations between master and man in his case. As a public man he held broad views and he was a liberal supporter of anything worthy of pub-
lie assistance. For the lust 10 years Mr Moody had lived in retirement, taking no part iv public life.
