URGED TO BIGAMY.
WIFE'S REMARKABLE STATE-
MENT,
Appearing fat Bow Street on behalf of Deborah Jeffreys l , 33, well dressed, charged, on her own confession, with bigamously marrying Horace Field Parshall at Eltham, Kent, on August 5, Mr Bennett (solicitor) made the startling assertion that his client contracted the second marriage at the direct instigation of her lawful husband. • Mr Bennett said! the latter promised his. wife that if she would make over to him her house of furniture and give him £600, which she had in the bank, he would never trouble her again. In June last she complied with the demand. Soon after her bigamous marriage she was confronted with an anonymous letter which her husband had sent to Mr Parshall, ai;d she then confessed everything. The latter said that he would be compelled to leave her, but would piovide for her. Detective-Inspector Gough said, the woman gave herself, up at Bow Street Police Station, and said she was married at 23 to her first husband, who never did a stroke of work after their marriage, and thrashed "* her whenever she was unable to find him money. In January, 1911, she was irtroduced to her "second husband," who proposed marriage, not knowing she was already married/. She told her husband, who urged her to accept the proposal, as Mr Parshall had plenty of money. After making over all her property to her husband she left him in June lasst, and, under a threat that he would kill her if she did not do as he wished she introduced him to Mr Parshall as her brother-in-law. A remand was granted.
