DUNEDIN NORTH BY-ELECTION
Labor Wins, Liberals Routed . The polling iii the Danedin North by-election took place on Wednesday, June 21, and resulted in a A\in for Mr. J. W. Munro, the Labor candidate, who secured a majority of 141 voles over the Tory. The Liberal was nowhere, his deposit being saved only by a handful of A r otes. The result of the. polling was as under: JAMES W. MUNRO (Labor) 3380 James J.. Clark (Tory) 3239 William Begg (Liberal) . 908 Majority for Mr. Munro, 141 Th e election of Mr. Munro was received Avith tremendous cheers. After briefly thanking the electoi'S for what they had done for the cause of Labor. h e was shouldered by the crowd, and escorted home amid a running fire of congratulations. According to the "Otago Daily Times" his 'exit Avas triumphal." Mr. Munro for many ye;ars has been a member of all the advanced Labor movements in Dunedin. and- haa held riiost of its official positions at ona time and another. This is the sixth, campaign he has fought, us a Parliamentary Labor candidate. In 1914 Mr. Munro .suffered the worst of luck, when he stood for Dunedin Central against Mr. C E. Statham. and polled a majority, but lost tlie election through an official mistake. Mr. Statham resigned to contest the seat again, .and in the second election, Mr. Munro was defeated. By winning Dunedin North he regained a Labor seat, Mr. Andrew Walker having held it from 1914 to 1919. when he lost it to Mr. Kollett. Mr. Munro's victory gives the Party -a Parliamentary strength of nine. . ~

The coming of the Dunedin byelection 'is, at present, the matter of supreme interest to the local Labor Party. The electorate is a sonieAvhat scattered one, making it difficult to canvass, but the Labor candidate, Mr. J. W. Munro. is very ably supported by Messrs. Holland. McCombs, Sullivan and Howard, M.P.'s, and good meetings are reported from the outlying ,as Avell as central parts.
This week, we are having the ideasure of hearing the famous Prof:-s*..or Goode speak on different phases of the Soviet regime. He has already given (avo lectures, and a third is arranged for Sunday evening ac the Empire Theatre.—F. M. MACKELLAR.
