UNEMPLOYMENT AND STRODE

A short thne ago an immigrant woman committed suicide in Oamaru in a fit of depression caused by her husband's unemployment. This tragedy of soulless capitalism was last week followed in Wellington by attempted suicide in one case and suicide in another, the cause in each case being unemployment. In the latter instance the young man had been out of work for nine months. Here are threo tragedies directly traceable to unemployment in New Zealand, but within the last fortnight over 1000 immigrants have ar r rived in the country. The brutal heartlessness of it all is repellent. By way of illustrating the monstrosity o£ capitalism the young man who attempted suicide was arrested! Of course it is capitalism that should have been arrested.

About the computer-generated text

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a process for automatically extracting text from scanned pages. OCR enables searching of large quantities of full-text data, but it is not 100% accurate. The level of accuracy depends on the print quality of the original newspaper and its condition at the time of microfilming. Newspapers with poor quality paper, small print, mixed fonts, multiple column layouts or damaged pages may have poor OCR accuracy.

The page where this item appears has an estimated OCR accuracy of 97.78%.
