PRISONER'S DEPENDENTS' FUND.

Comrades,—Next week will be Conference week, so I am giving, you an idea of how this Fund stands. You will remember that Semple was jailed at the end of December. This Fund was started practically the first week in January. We have received up to date £1461 15s. We have paid out approximately £600. Semple, Cooke, Thorn and.Fraser ought to be out somewhere about October. Parker, Armstrong, and Fournier about November, and the others not until the New Year. Brindle, Williams and Ramsay have not been rceiving anything from the Fund, because they had no one dependent on them. The others have been paid the following rates Married women, £2 per week and ss. per week for each child. You will note that this is not an extravagant wage to pay a woman whose husband is locked away on our behalf. At the commencement of the year it looked as if every prominent man in the Labor movement would be soon under lock and key. It is a very old way to get rid of political opponents. The Committee did not feel justified in paying any higher rate, and even now it doesn't look as if it could be increased to any great extent. The men ought to get at least a fortnight's holiday and be given a few pounds when they are released. I shall lay the whole matter before the Conference, and in the meantime I shall be glad to receive any advice from any contributor.—E. J. HOWARD, Organiser, i

About the computer-generated text

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a process for automatically extracting text from scanned pages. OCR enables searching of large quantities of full-text data, but it is not 100% accurate. The level of accuracy depends on the print quality of the original newspaper and its condition at the time of microfilming. Newspapers with poor quality paper, small print, mixed fonts, multiple column layouts or damaged pages may have poor OCR accuracy.

The page where this item appears has an estimated OCR accuracy of 97.89%.
