War Loan

A Good Investment

STOCKBROKER'S ILLUMINAT-

INC CIRCULAR.

Tho following is a copy of a circular recently issued from an Auckland stockbroker's office. It is dated September 30, 1916, and" speaks for itself. Comment on our part would be wholly superfluous:— "During the past month the share market has shown considerable increas 1 in activity, and a good business has been'done at firmer prices in many instances. "Tho now War Loan has, with the aid of tho Banks, been entirely successful, over £10,000,000 in allhaving been subscribed. THE LOAN IS A PARTICULARLY GOOD INVESTMENT FOR, THOSE WHO HAVE TO PAY A HIGH BATE'OF INCOME.TAX, the interest" .being freo from taxation. This regulation makes, tho War. Loan Bunds .in investment equivalent to nearly 5-J- per cent, per annum for all companies and persons whoso incomes exceed £5000 ncr annum. WHILE PEOPLE WITH SMALL INCOMES OBTAIN NO CONCESSIONS, and receive therefore, in effect about 1 per cent, less for their money. The good response of small investors may therefore be attributed in most cases to patriotic motives. "The Union Steamship shares havo fluctuated a good deal, and a'large business Jiss been done iv them. At tbe timo of writing they aro below the level at which tbey stood when last report was -issued. , There has been no confirmation of former rumours of amalgamation with some other company, but quite apart from any possibility of this nature, tho shares appear to bo well worth the consideration of investors. The Company's vessels aro set down in ,their balance sheet at a valuation of about £9 per ton 0 f Hvt> ; r gross aggregate tonnage. "A. recent cable Rnnrted. the sale in England, of the London and Northern Company's fleet of 22 cargo steamers, nt a price eounl Io about £20 per ton.' Tf we take the Union Company's fleet at tho very modereto estimate' of £]..~, per ton, we arrive at n . valuation"of <'fc""t .<M,000,000.. Deducting£l,ooo-000 as represented by the preference shares, , vo hayo ft b , |l;iiw ■C3.0n0.00n reoriented t,v iho 1-000.000 ordinary shares, -at'say, C 3 per share."
