Stormy Meeting at Wellington
There is intense dissatisfaction in
I the ranks of the Wellington drivers with the Cabinet's award in the drivers' case. The drivers' representatives aro strongly censured for having agreed to accept Cabinet's decision. Sunday's meeting Avas one of tho stormiest ever held, and it is certain that even if the terms are accepted, it can only amount to a patched-up peace; tor married men cannot possibly live upon £2 18s. per week; the hard fact remains that with the present scarcity of labor and the industrial conditions in favor of tho workmen, the drivers can practically fix their own wages. "Tho Worker" represontatiA r e was refused admission to Sunday's meeting by the local officials—a rather extraordinary lino of policy, surely, in view oi the fact that "The Worker" is the official mouthpiece of Labor, and Avas the only paper to aeriously fight the drivers' battle. OFFICIAL REPORT. After tho meeting the foiloAving was jtarwarded to us for publication: At the Alexandra Hall on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 p.m., a special meeting of the DriA-ers' Union was held. It was called fo_r tho purpose of receiving the report of the Conference Avilh the Employers, and the decision of Cabinet. Much dissatisfaction was expressed by members at the wages fixed, viz., £2 18s. and £3 2s. for one and two horse drivers respectively, and the action of the delegates in referring the matter unreservedly to Cabinet was severely criticised.
Special dissatisfaction was expressed that nothing had been done to increase the overtime rates, which are absurdly low. The report was adopted. The scrutineers who were appointed to supervise the recent ballot, which was taken to obtain an expression of the members on tho question of striking as a protest against the award of the Arbitration Court and the refusal of the local employers to meet tbe union in conference, announced tho result of tho ballot, which was in favor of a strike by a very large majority.
