KAIRANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.

General Business.

At the -meeting of the Kairanga, County Council yesterdny, there were< present Crs S. W. Luiford (chairman), Manson, Were, Voss, Greer, Yaiid Moo.dy. ' : : -^^ : The Lands and Secretary Department" informed the Council that no cutting or sawmill rights had .been, granted over the Forest Reserve at Fitzherbert.; '•{■' > Information was sought by the Manawatu County Cour.cil as.to whether the Kairanga Council intended driving further iron rails at the Awahuri bridge protective works.—The Engineer reported that the new work was now almost completed. During the:.recent fresh in the river the benefit'of the works had been apparent. Mr W. King called the Cbuncil's'attention to the state of Eggleton's road at Bunnythorpe.—No action taken. :; Mr George Knight gave the Council notice to remove a fence from Boye's road.—No action taken. Mr P. Cronin applied for the lease qf a portion of Flyger's line, which it was j resolved to grant if there were ho objectors... : - . -. ..■. Mr C. Pederson, ' Jackej town, signified his willingness to sell .land for; a "road along the; south boundary of sections 3 J, No. 3 at £25 per acre.—Total cost to bo ascertained. It was. resolved to allow Mr Perrin the lease of part of Flyger's .line, as applied for. Messrs G. Dear, W- Osborne and others waited on the Board and asked that repairs be- effected to the. Lower Aorangi,. road.—The -'county-' foreman pointed out that flax carts had cut the roads up/ and-he thought the millowners responsible should carry out the repairs. —The chairman, said the Council could do nothing at present, but would attend to the request when the dry, season came. . . . . : . Mr McGregor, sawmiller, Fitzherbert, made request for permission to lay a tram line along the Linton road from the foot of the hill, at Scott's -road to the railway line.—Councillors were of the opinion the. laying of the line would be of material advantage to the Council in the saving' of their roads; The matter was left to Crs Greer and Moody and the overseer with power to act. •'' A Tiritea settler''interviewed the Board in regard-' to the proposed upper Tiritea- bridge at Munro!s ford.- He said that the overseer's estimate for the bridge was £285, but the settlers were of opinion it could he done for less.—The" chairman regretted the Council could not make a grant towards the cost. ■ Messrs Rowlands and Christiansen attended in referenee.to-the construction Of Christiansen's road at Jb'itzherbert. They asked that the balance of the .deferred thirds, amounting to £57 ss, paid 20 years ago to the Fitzherbert Road Board,.-be passed i for the purpose.—This amount, however, could "not be traoed, and the matter was deferred for the present.

It was resolved to grant Mr Pedersen permission to make a drain on-Hamilton's road, the wort to be done to the: satisfaction of the foremanY «' .'■" •."

-Or Greer referred to a remark made by the Premier in the House that he bad been asked to. extend' the rating power of local bodies. Cr Greer expressed himself against such a-proposal. —It was decided to discuss .the matter next Council day. The county balance-sheet laid before councillors showejd. the total receipts in the general account to be £6137 13s 6d.: Of this amount £3691 3s 5d was for general rates, £785 14s 5d Government subsidy, and £225 15s lid Palmerston: North borough contribution to Awahuri -bridge works. The disbursements, with a^ balance at the beginning of the year of —3356 3s 2d, amounted:'to £8508 lis 6d, leaving a debit balance of £23.70 18s. The amount spent, in public works was £4087.1s 7d. It will be seen that the amount of tbe debit balance has been materially reduced during the year.
