THE PRODUCE COMMISSIONER.

He Meets Dairymen.

An Impression.

(By A Factory Dibector.)

For several years this colony has had a Produce Commissioner at the great world market of London watching over its produce and generally conserving the interests of producers in this colony t It is a recognised weakness of the dairy business, so far as this colony is concerned, that those directing'it and those engaged in it labour under the disadvantage of having no knowledge of the critical market it caters to and of the produce' of its competitors. It waa, therefore, with a very great deal of interest that dairymen throughout the colony looked forward to the opportunity of meeting one who has had the unique advantage enjoyed by Mr Cameron. A* last they were to be told what actually took place on ilie London market and were to come face to face with the man who could answer the many questions which crowded their brains as to their business at the market end. This has now come to pass, and Mr Cameron has met them. • What is the, result ? As far as I am concerned—having carefully read; the Dairy Commissioner's annual reports, arid having had the privilege of occasionally seeing; letters from reliable London dairy produce firms—l am just as wise: a« I was before. The only impression left on my mind is the suggestion—made by a Dunedin visitor—.that.» Government grader, one having ■ knowledge, of the manufacturing _ end of the buaineso, is the 'only tqan who can do dairy producers any real good at the Home end. r- Such a man, having • practical knowledge of the manufacturing end of the business, would be able to compare the ideas and standards of instructors, graders, and makers in this colony with the opinions on butter— good and bad—of the London buyer and retailer. The papers read by Mr Cameron, second editions of his periodical re. ports, were interesting in their, way, but they were singularly free from original. ity or ideas which will improve the position. The importance of the dairying industry of this colony demands that it should be represented in Great Britain by a man having a thorough and technical knowledge of it; and little good will result from London representation till such a man is appointed.
