Murder at the Islands.
(FreßS Association.— Copyright.) Sydney, April 28. The steamer Moresby brought details of a massacre at St. Matthias- Island, the northernmost of the Bismarck Archipelago, east of New Guinea.
While the Moresby was at New- Britain, the yacht Eberhardt,. owned by Herr Mencke, who is conducting a scientific expedition in the' archipelago, arrived, and- reported! that when Herr Mencke, with his secretary (Herr Caro), the docto* and some native boys were camped on Matthias Island, the natives attacked them in great force. The doctor was speared ia tb'e leg but managed to escape. A party afterwards returned to the scene of the attack, iM_d found Menoue dead. Caro war, severely injured and died after removal to the yacht.
Herr Mencke was a millionaire. Six natives belonging to hia par. were also killed, but not before 14 cannibals had bean shot down.
