« THE COUPON SYSTEM. A small instalment of the oonpon system is to be brought into opera* tion on the Victorian - railways. Book?, containing 500 coupons, each representing a mile, are being issued at a price which will enable journeys to be made in the course of a year aggregating 500 miles at excursion rates. The price of a 500 mile firstclass ticket will be £4 and a secondclass ticket £2 159. The holder of a coupon book before making a journey will have to present coupons representing the mileage, and will receive an ordinary single ticket in exchange. Return tickets will not to be trans* ferable, and the purchaser will have to sign his name in his book, and may be called upon to give his signature for the purpose of comparison when he is taking out a . ticket. A breach of the departmental regulation in this regard will involve the forfeiture of the whoje book of coupons. Fractions of a mile are to be charged as a mile, and if less than a five mile journey be made five tickets must be presented. The system has been introduced mainly with the object of affording some convenience to cyclists and tourists.
