Everett, of Umukuri,viu the course of a letter to his father', 1 elates the following interesting experience: — On the way to England from Ales- j ;indria,- on October Hist, in the hospital ship Ebani, and a day, or two' before reaching Gibraltar, wo saw a "demon of the deep" sink a cargo boat n few miles away from us, after the crew time to tako to the boasts. The submarine came to the surface and sunk her with shell fire. We had in the meantime stopped, and when .'the :-;tea,me<> began I>O sink the submarine made over to us and was! met about 500 yards away by one of pur ship's ameers and one of the .senior medical officers from' on board.. \ The submarine commander examined j the ship's list, which the medical officer took out, and in a minute jravis permission, to pick up the crew of the' sunken vessel and go on. In lest-;; than two hours were were on our way with; the crew aboard. One of our destroyers came up only an hour later. ~ It was very interesting for a little while, wondering what they i were going to do with us; but the 'hospital ships are painted so that no mistake-can be made, and there is no doubt, that it was only the Red Cross 'thai saved us.
