Fine Art Jewellery.
A LOCAL INDUSTRY. • Mr J. Baker, of Main street, -has com menced making gold and silver wire jewellery" :. of all descriptions, and has already received a large number of orders. One of bur repre- r _ sentatives paid Mr Baker's establishment's.', visit this morning, and found that not only are the wire goods made up on the premises, ; but that the gold and silver wire is manufactured from the raw metal also. The ' process, is a most interesting one. First the metal is. melted down in a crucible, and afterwards by means of a strong lever arrangement pulled through a metal draw-plate, which is provided with holes of varying sizes, until the right thickness of wire is obtained. Mr Baker and his sons have become quite proficient in the art of -making up name brooches, initial pins, etc., and turn out work equal to anything we have seen. In addition to the quality of the workmanship, there is the fact that the whole of the work is a purely local industry. Mr Baker's charges for the variety of goods we have named are exceedingly moderate, and no doubt when the fact of his turning out jewellery of this description becomes more generally kuown, he will be rushed with orders.
