THE RESCUING CAPTAIN'S STATEMENT.
Capt. Johnson, of the Northejtt Co/a steamer Argyle, says : I left Auckland at midnight on Tuesday, m joy usial i weekly trip to the Great Babies, arriving I at Trypbena on Tuesday morning. Leaving there I called" in at Blind Bay, and then went on to Port Filzroy. While on the way to the latter place, I saw a lot of wreckage floating about, consisting of cabin and boat fittings aud' drawers. 1 ■ ■ •t noon I found Mr Johnson (third off! .«■) and a number of men, and was informed tbat tbe Wairarapa had been wrecked ■family after midnight on Sunday at the qther side of tbe Island, 1 then proceeded •to Catherine Bay, where I found a large number of survivors and took them on board, and then went on to Miner's Head, where the wreck was, and closely examined the ; coast all along in order to see If there were any survivors there. Numerous dead bodies were seen floating about, nearly all having life belts on. No liviog persons were, however, seen, and I. arrived at Miner's Hea- This is thafretthweaternmost point of the Great Rarrii^ {aland. I then proceeded round the eastenfpart of the Island, closely examining the coast as I went along, and found 20 more Burvivotß in a Bmall bay opposite Arid Island. Taking these on board I then came on straight to Auckland, arriving shortly before three o'clock this morning.
