SPORTS AND PASTIMES

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" is a well-known saying. In the cities and larger towns there are innumerable amusements for the people, but in the country amusements are limited to social gatherings and, perhaps, an occasional picture show, though in some centres the population is not sufficient to even provide the last named entertainment. After the toil and monotony of the farm and shop, it is right and proper that thepeople should indulge in someform of relaxation. ''All work and no jday" is not good for anyon —a little occasional amusement is natural to human beings, and even the lower forms of life have their fun, their "lighter moments," and the dumb animals, etc., frolic and gambol at intervals. Those people who engage in the dairy industry and other forms of farming have a stenuous time, even though they make good money; but of what value is life without health and opportunity to enjoy it ? This particular district now engages in a number of different forms of recreation, amusements and pastimes : we have the tennis, cricket and football clubs, the bowling green ; the motion pictures—that wonderful God-sent celluloid ribbon that interests, amuses and educates millions throughout the world, that has completely revolutionised the oldtime dreary, monotonous stapre plays, a great system of cheap entertainment for the masses. Then there are the periodical dances and socials, which are always eagerly looked forward to by the young people. And librarybooks to read. Truly, though we live in the country, our lot is not altogether a bad one. The cities attract people on account of the 1 life" they afford, but for downright sociability and enjoyment many parts of the country cannot be excelled.
