HALF A MILLION FRY

STOCKING WANGANUI RIVER

(BY TELEGRAPH -PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TAUMARUNUI, Oct. 16. Mr. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, is at present visiting the Kakahi hatcheries, near Taumarunui, for the purpose of liberating half a million Atlantic fry which have been successfully hatched by Mr'. Bebbington, who bin chajge at Kakahi. These will be liberated in the Whakapapa, Kakahi, Punga Punga, and other streams which flow into the Wanganui. Already'Mr. Bebbington has liberated 200,000, and the liberation of the remainder may be held up for a few days on account of the state of the rivers, which are swollen by recent rains. The Wanganui river is the first in the North Island to be stocked with Atlantic salmon, and Mr. Ayson expresses the opinion that it is the most suitable in the Dominion, and he considers it an angler's paradise. He predicts that once the river is stocked there will be no end of tourists to the district from all parts of the Dominion and Australia. Mr. Ayson believes in intensive stocking and intends \to concentrate on the Wanganui river for the next eight years. He hopes to liberate over half a million frjr annually.
