MR. CHARLES DAVIES.
It is with sincere regret that we record the death of Mr. Charles Davies, a resident of Taranaki for forty years. His death occurred at his residence at Normanby yesterday afternoon, when, at the age of 80 years, he passed away peacefully after a short illness. Mr. Davies, who was a carpenter by trade, came out to New Zealand In the ship Douglas in 1874. He landed at Wellington and then proceeded to Hokitika, where his first job was to build the emigrants' barracks. After spending a few years on the West Coast, he ! went to Rangiora. In 1883 he came to ; Taranaki and settled in the vicinity of ' Oiakeho. Taranaki was a very different place in those days,1 and it requires but little imagination to arrive at some idea of what Mr Davies had to go through. Nevertheless, despite the hard times, he always kept some imported stock, HoJsteins being the breed he preferred. After leading a strenuous life, Mr. Davies retired 20 years ago to Normanby, where he took an active interest in publio affairs. He was chairman of the Town Board for many years, and also acted in the capacity of a J.P. He was a man who was much respected in the district, and his many friends will extend the deepest sympathy to his widow and ' f/vnr smi<! and fivA flanaht-pi's;
