The following British ships were in China waters on May 9tb, the date the Japanese mail steamer Kasuga Maru left Hong Kong : —

Centurion, battleship, first-class, 10,500 tons, 14 guns, at Kobe.

Endymion, cruiser, first-class, 7350 tons, 12 guns, at Wei-hai-wei.
Eak, gunboat, third-class coast defence, 363 tons, three guns, at Shanghai.
Fame, torpedo-boat destroyer, 360 tons, six guns, at Hong Kong.
Firebrand, gunboat, second-class, 455 tons, four gunß, at Hong Kong.
Handy, torpedo- boat destroyer, 275 tons, bix guns, at Hong Kong.
Hart, torpedo-boat destroyer, 275 tons, six guns, at Hong Kong.
