BLAKETOWN SCHOOL PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

On Saturday afternoon at 2.30 the scholars of the Blaketown School and their parents, assembled in the School Gymnasium for the annual prize giving. Mr. J. Weaver, hon. secretary of the Blaketown Social Committee, in addressing those present said that this was the fifth year in which prizes had been donated by the Social- Committee. This year, however, the socials which the committee had arranjj'od had not resulted in as large a profit us they had iji other years. First it was thought thought there would not bo sufficient to provide attendance prizes. Consequently he had canvassed for donations toAvards the Prize Fund and in this way over £2 was added to the Fund. The reason of the falling off in the amount of the prize money was that few of the parents themselves attended or took an interest in the socials, a fact which was to be regretted, as the only object of the Social Committee in holding the weekly gatherings was to provode the prizes for the children. Mr. Weaver then thanked the teachers for so carefully examining the children in all classes, thus making the task of awarding the prizes much easier for the Social Committee. In the unavoidable absence ol! Mr. Sweetman, chairman of the Greymouth School Committee he asked Mr. Williams (ex-chairman) to present the prizes. . After the prizes had been presented, Mr. Williams, in a short speech, said that he was sure all present were extremely grateful to the Social Committee for helping to provide the prizes, md to Mr. Weaver, for so kindly collecting ■ for the prize fund, and for providing, with the assistance of Miss Harrington, afternoon tea for the ladies present. — (Loud applause). In addition to the attendance and the proficiency prizes, a gift book was handed to all pupils on the school registers.
