TWENTY-NINE MILES AN HOUR.
(ENGLISH MECHANIC.) High speeds are being gradually attained in steam vessels by the use of enormous high horse-power compared with the size of the ships. The other day a torpedo boat for the Italian Government made the almost phenomenal mean speed of nearly 29 miles an hour in the river below Gravesend j and the Italian cruiser Dogali, in experimental trips at sea, made a mean of 22^ miles an hour. The latter i 3 probably the fastest cruiser afloat, and the high speed haa been obtained by the use of triple expansion engines and high -pressure steam. It will be noticed that both vesae's are for the Italian Government.
