NEW ZEALANDERS AT HOME

London, February 4. Mr F. F. Miles, New Zealand's 1913 Rhodes Scholar, now at Balliol, distinguished himself this week in the semi-final of the Inter-Collegiate Challenge Cup competition at Oxford, Balliol beatjng Trinity by 53 points to 27. In the Throwing of the Hammer Event the New Zealander, whose distance was 77ft. llin., defeated Trinity's representative, G. B. Taylor, who threw 75ft. 5 in.

A. H. Harkness, Martin B. Tweed; and A. B. Danby—all New Zealand medical students at Guy's Hospital— were on the winning side yesterday, in the match against St. Thomas Hospital team. The favourites scored three goals and three tries to a dropped goal. From beginning to end the match was a rollicking, tearaway one of rushes and tackles and random passes.

Mr W. S. . Two fresh appointments to the General Staff (second grade) in New Zealand are officially notified this week. Captain Clarence Reginald Mac Donald, whose age is 37, served in the South African war with the Leinster Regiment, and later became adjutant in the Ist Royal Warwickshires, which is -his regiment at present. Captain Mac Donald is going to the Canterbruy Military District to replace Captain Pinwell, whose period of service in New l Zealand concludes on 9th June. Captain Charles Monk Gibbon, who is 36 years of age, entered the Royal Irish Fusiliers in -1898. He served in South Africa as Brigade Signalling Officer, and ; subsequently went to India as Staff Captain on the Intelligence Branch becoming a General-Staff Officer there. Captain Gibbon is to relieve Major J. K. Cochrane.
