Floods in Queensland
(I'KK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, February 5. Information has been received from Toowoomba, Queensland, that the town of Ipswich is under water, which has reached the height of the roofs of two churches. Communication by rail and telegraph with Brisbane is interrupted. At Buudamba, 25 milea west of Brisbane, scarcely a house is visible. Twenty »five inches of rain havo fallen in the lost 24 hours. Scores of families have been rendered homeless. A terrible disaster has occurred at the Eclipse Colliery. Seven miners went to work in the mine as usual this morning. The flood waters broke into the mine, flooding it to within 30 feet of the surfaceQoodna is completely submerged, and fears aro entertained for the safety of the Lunatic Asylum, which is surrounded by water. February 6. Reports from Toowoomba state that tho water is receding in Ipswich, though it is still at high level. It is believed that 22 liyos have been lost, but nothing definite can be ascertained till the floods subside. Hundreds of people are homeless at Bundalerg, and are sheltering in the churches and public buildiugs. Thore is appalling devastation in Maryborough. It la reported that a bridge collapsed, drowning 30 persons. Tho town is in darkness, the gasworks being submerged, and hundreds of houses havo been washed away. In Gympio, tho main street is 30 feet under water. Sydney, This Day. All the northern rivers are in flood and much damago has been done to maize at Clarence, while at Tweed nearly all the oarly mai/.e has boon ruined. Eockhampton, This Day. Eleven miles of railway have been washed away near here. No loss of life is reported. At Tawoomba the flood is steadily declining. At Ipswich there are terrible scenes of desolation, and the streets are in a frightful mess, emitting a horrible stench. The Governor has reached Ipswich, but is unable to get to Brisbane. A fund for the relief ol the sufferers has been started. The passengers by the Syduey tram haye been camped at Red Bank since Friday, and provisions are despatched to them by boat. A man named Heenan and his 6ister have been carried away in a boat at Goodna, and it is feared they have perished. The Thorehole mine at Blackstone, and the Lindsay mine at Bundama have collapsed. The water has reached the top ol the Catholic Church in Goodna, and houses are floating about in all directions.
