"GHOST" PLANE FOOLS PILOTS
A "ghost" plane which rises from the sea every few months, is the only Jap aircraft which gets any attention from Australians and New Zealanders on Bougainville Island. The plane was shot down two years ago and fell on a sand bank offshore from Kuraio Mission, on the west coast Every few months the sand bank rises and exposes the plane to the view of a pilot, who, ignorant of its history peels off and strafes it. An Australian commando patrol went towards Kuraio to investigate the plane from the beach. There was no sign of it it had retired under the waves. •
