NAMING OF JUVENILE
"In a paragraph in your issue of Saturday last you: mentioned that the name Battleaxe was to be claimed for the Coronach—Brown Pearl colt," writes "K." "Is this name likely to be allowed, for there was a Taranakiowned Battle Axe, a solid performer, round about 1898-1900?" "Coronach," he continues, "is a mournful sort of name and does not afford much scope for nomenclature. Curiously enough, the next name to Coronach in the Concise Oxford Dictionary is Coronal (circlet of gems), and had the youngster been a filly it . would have been fairly appropriate, ' embracing part of the sire's name and having a reference to that of the dam. 1 However, as the youngster is being ' heralded as likely to be good, why not Fanfare, which is generally an expression of joy and more in keeping with ; ,Mr. McDougall's other representative, Happy Ending?" [The older Battle Axe was by Hotchkiss from the King Cole mare Queen Cole, and as he' was a gelding it is unlikely that exception will be taken to the name being repeated. There is some uncertainty meantime whether 1 the youngster's name will be Battle Axe or Battleaxe.—"Binocular."]
