STOP PRESS * — BY-ELECTION TOTALS. Christchurch.—The final totals in the Christchurch East by-elec-tion are: Miss Howard (Labour) 4559, H. E. Herring (Democratic Labour) 2578. M. E. Lyons (National) 2371, L. A. Efford ("Peace" candidate) 114, O. J. McKee (Independent Socialist) 22. Miss Howard's majority is increased by 172 votes. There were 213 soldiers' votes, of which 106 were cast in New Zealand and 107 overseas. Of these Miss Howard received 86, and Messrs. Lyons 49, Herring 45, Efford 3, and McKee 2.— P.A. BOWLING. Centre's singles championship.— London (Wellington), Adams (KaJWfij, Hutton (Thorndon), and McMillan (Seatoun) entered the semi-finals.
