MR. C. H. CLINKARD

The death occurred in Rotorua on Monday after a long illness of Mr. C. H. Clinkard, the first Mayor of Rotorua and twice member of Parliament for the Rotorua electorate, says a Press Association message. He was aged? 79.

Mr. Clinkard came of a family of farmers. He was born in Oxford, England. His parents emigrated to New Zealand in the early days, settling in the Kaipara district, where they cleared and farmed over two thousand acres. Mr. Clinkard's first business venture was in the kauri timber industry, which he followed successfully for more than twenty years. Later he

resided at Devonport, Auckland, where he began to take a keen interest in civic affairs. He was invited to contest the Waitemata constituency in the Liberal interest, but lost a well-fought contest to the Hon. E. W. Alison. Subsequently Mr. Clinkard commenced farming at Mamaku, where he remained for several years, and in 1915 he took up bis residence in Rotorua, where he established a motor-car business. Mr. Clinkard had a long association with Masonic affairs, rising to an exalted position in the craft.
