TROUBLESOME STOWAWAY
Robert George Eurnard. (18), a kitchen porter, of Dunedin, was sentenced to 28 days' hard labour at Home after stowing away on the s.s. Port Caroline at Auckland on April 14. The prosecuting counsel said that the youth's explanation was that he wanted to get away because of family trouble. Some days previously he had applied for a job on the vessel, but was told there was no vacancy. The lad was a considerable nuisance during the voyage, and at two ports while the ship was bunkered he was taken ashore and kept in custody. Once when brought back, he was put on the bridge under supervision, but escaped over the side of the ship and stowed away in a coal tug. He was found ahd brought back to the ship.
