THE SEMI-FINALS

HARD MATCHES IN SINGLES

I Hard-fought semi-finals between Misses J. Ramsay (Auckland) and N. Fleming (Wellington) and between H. H. Fow and R. Lewis (both Waikato) in the women's and men's singles respectively, was the feature of the New Zealand badminton tournament last' evening. Miss Ramsay had four match points on Miss Fleming in the second set, but eventually the Wellington player settled the game, won the set, and went on to win the last set with the loss of two points only. In the other semi-final, Miss Edmondson did not repeat her earlier form, and the holder, Miss Kerr, playing steadily and imperturbably, won surprisingly easily. • Lewis took the first set against Fow, who was champion in 1934, but lapsed, and Fow meritoriously won the second set. "Fow had a lead of 14-11 in the final setj but Lewis, hitting courageously, eventually won well. In the other semi-final, P. Hawksworth was in brilliant form to easily eliminate P. Anderson (Auckland). The. following are the results:-— Men's Singles. — Semi-finals: P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa) beat P. Anderson (Auckland), 15-2, 15-3; R. Lewis (Waikato) beat H. H. Fow (Hamilton), 15-4, 8-15, 17-14. Women's Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss M. Kerr (Otago) beat-Miss M. Edmondson (Hamilton), 11-5, 11-1; Miss N. Fleming (Wellington) *beat Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland), 5-11, 12-10, 11-2. Men's Doubles. —Semi-finals: P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa) and G. A. Pearce (Wellington) beat B. A. Whale and P. Anderson (Auckland), 15-10, 17-14; I. Ellett and R. Hull (Auckland) beat R. Lewis (Waikato) and J. Lewis (Auckland),' 15-12,' 6-15, 15-10. Women's Doubles.—Semi-finalsc Mrs. P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa) and Miss M. Kerr (Otago) beat Misses J. Ramsay and M. Wade (Auckland), 18-13, 15-1; Mrs. C. F. Wren (Auckland) and Miss M. Edmondson (Hamilton) beat Misses N. Fleming and F. Fernie (Wellington), 15-9, 15-11. Combined Doubles. —Semi-finals: P. Hawksworth and Mrs. Hawksworth beat A. Dempster and Miss J. Clough, 15-8, 15-1; G. A. Pearce and Miss M. Kerr beat R- Lewis and Miss M. Edmondson, 15-4, 12-15, 15-6. A challenge for the Wisden Cup, the emblem of badminton supremacy in New Zealand, was successfully withstood by the holders, Auckland,, in a match with Western -Districts (Wanganui) played at Bledisloe Hall yesterday. Auckland established a lead of 9 matches to 4 and defaulted in the remaining games in order to save the players for the Dominion championships at night: - ■ -
