GOLF
END OF SEASON
ENGLISH PERFORMANCE
NOTES AND COMMENTS
The exceptional sp^ll of fine weather in recent weeks has, so far as golfers are concerned, compensated for the dismal weather of mid-winter. It has hardened all courses and produced some phenomenally long driving. But it has also caused most golfers who believe in seasonal sports to turn their thoughts lightly to tennis and cricket and various other summer activities. Consequently, interest in golf in Wellington at the moment is not pronounced.
The Wellington-Miramar match last Saturday, won convincingly enough by Miramar, caused some excitement, and the performance of the Miramar players generally was splendid. It probably had its uses, too, for the Wellington players, since the club holds fairly strictly to summer golf and only recently started its season proper.
With several club championships finalised, the performance of Eric Kretschmar, of Shandon, against Jim Logan in the final the other day was particularly good. Kretschmar has had a good season in all respects. He has been consisted and towards the end has struck a patch of first-class form. At the moment, his game is extraordinarily well-rounded, with tee shots, seconds and putts all played with fine ease. A continuation of such form would make him outstanding next season.
