TORPEDO ATTEMPT
FRENCH STEAMER
UNKNOWN SUBMARINE
LONDON, August 14.
A message from Tunis states that an unknown submarine tried to torpedo the French steamer Parame off Bizerta. The crews of French steamers at Tunis met and demanded protection.
The "Daily Telegraph's" Paris correspondent says that two bombers from the Bizerta naval base are protecting French shipping in the 'western Mediterranean. Each is armed with four double-firing machine-guns, capable of 1600 shots a minute, and four high explosive bombs. The thirty survivors of the Spanish Government tanker Campeador accuse Italian destroyers of sinking the vessel. They state that 12 of the crew were trapped in the engine-room and burnt alive in blazing oil and that the Italian warship Saetta circled round the Campeador and was later joined by another. A destroyer hot flying a flag followed and shelled the Campeador at nightfall and continued shelling as boats were lowered. The Campeador is still burning, and a French naval cutter is guarding her.
