:For the second time since the inauguration of the competition the' Chatham Cup, the trophy for the champion club Association football team of the Dominion, is to go to Auckland, Ponsonby defeating I Northern (Dunedin) in the final played at-Newtown Park on Saturday by 3 goals to 2. As far as football was concerned, the display was disappointing. This fact, however, could probably be accounted for by the nigh wind which swept the pitch, and which ma large measure made good football impossible. The ground was in good condition.. The attendance of the public W tS'*?* S s BT?kt as might-have been. ■ in the hrst spell Ponsonby played with the wind,.and ran up three goals to Northern s ml. When Northern played with the wind m the second half they scored twice in the first twenty minutes, and their prospects of lowering Ponsonby's colours ' were bright. .The Auckland' team, however, : developed a sound defence as the game progressed, and managed to win by one goal. . • The teams were: l,^l^*; Picket*, Williams; Morrison, Wright, Mooney;. Northern,kicked off against .the'-strong! wind and pressed till Williams relieved! JVlLean on the left wing, worked up the ime, but Pickett came across and found safety. Ponsonby pressed, forcing a corner, and the kick went behind. Some nice combined work between M-'Cormack .and_MLean made Northern's chances W;«r* L!la'1 centred with judgment, but MTavish could not keep his-:footing, and failed to reach the leather. Ponsonby again _pressed, and ' another' corner resulted. Play returned to near midfield, from where Hunter, Ponsonby's right wing, tried a-long shot at goal,, and the wind carried the ball into the goal mouth. While clearing M'Quarrie fumbled, and carried the ball over the line: , Ponsonby 1, Nor-1 "them 0. , Within five, minutes Ponsonby, scored again, this time Imies finding the net trom close up, making the score: Ponsonby 2, Northern 0. Helped by the wind, Ponsonby continued to press and' tried shooting from all angles. Hunter was again prominent in sending in- a' shot which M'Quarrie was lucky, to save. A' determined attack on thf^Part of Northern saw M'Dowell and MHugh well up'the wing, but they had to reckon with Williams, who intercepted the attack, skilfully. A few moments later the .-Northern forwards broke through I Ponsonby's,defence, but the ball was lost when near goal.; A corner followed. The wind, however, took charge-of the leather carrying-it well clear of Ponsonby's goal. Ponsonby kept- pressing, "and ultimately secured a. -'■ corner. Addshead took the kick, aud when the ball was sent out to | him again from the goal-mouth he sent in a swerving shot which the wind carried into the net, making the'score: Ponsonby 3, Northern 0. Half-time was called soon afterwards. - - v .Although Ponßonby had the wind against them in the second hah° they started play in this spell with a strong attack'in which lunes ; was prominent: During' a'-lull, M'Cormack obtained possession, and sent the leather out to M'Dowell, on the right wing, who after a.v solo run made no mistake in netting the ball with a hard shot Ponsonby;3, Northern' l v A few minutes later Watts, in goal for Ponsonby, was oalled on to gave a dangerous shot from ! M'Tavish. Ponsonby now took a hand, and Innes worked' up field ■ and passed to Bell, Avho, however, lost the balfwhen.in a scoring position. The leather went to M'Tavish., who tried a long shot at' goal, the ball skimming the crossbar. Northern pressed, and repeated forward attacks saw Ponionby hard pressed.. M'Lean, "the left \vinger, centred from the corner, and M'Tavish, who was waiting in position, made no mistake with the shot. Ponsonby 3, Northern 2. Ponsonby attacked for a spell, but could do nothing. Tomilty missed a glorious opportunity, missing the net badly with a-'shot taken a few yards out. Addshead took a shot from a distance, but the attempt was weak. , A corner gave Northern a chance, but the kick, which was well taken, was lifted high over the net.' In the concluding stages Northern made 'strenuous efforts to score, but could not get within sure striking distance of the goal.
