Obituary.—General Pole-Penton, formerly ex-Commandant of the New Zealand Forces.
[General Arthur Pole-Penton was born in 1854, and entered the Royal Artillery in 1873. ' He served in Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880, being mentioned in despatches and decorated with the medal. He was Inspector of Warlike Stores from 1888 to 1891, Assistant to Director of Artillery from 1891 to 1893, BrigadeMajor Eoyal Artillery Bth District from 1893 to 1896, Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces from 1896 to 1901; Commandant Ordnance College, 1904-1907; Commander Coast Defences, Scotland, • 1907-1908; commanding Royal Artillery at Malta, 1908-12; and SouthWest Coast Defences from 1912 to 1916, when he retired.]
