ATTACK ON FUNCHAL
TRIUMPH FOR THE SUBMARINE
THREE SHIPS SUNK,
(REUTERS TELEGRAM.)
LONDON, 6th December. The Portuguese Minister for Marine announces .that German submarines attacked Funchal, and sank the auxiliary vessel Kangaroo, the English steamer Dacia, and the French gunboat Surprise. They then bombarded the town for two hours at a distance of two miles. The coastal batteries forced the submarines to withdraw. The commander and thirty-four of the Surprise's crew perished, and also a few Portuguese on board the Kangaroo and the Dacia.
[The Surprise is the first warship of any. kind ever sunk by gunfire from a submarine. She was a sister ship of the Zelee, which was sunk at Papeete by the Scharnhorst and the Giieisenau on 22nd September, 1914. She was of 680 tons, and was armed with two 4-inch, .four 9-pounders, and four 1-pounder guns, and carried 93 officers and men.]
