Mr. Sydney Buxton, President of the Board of Trade, has issued Dr. Arthur Newsholmo's report jii infantile mortality in England and Wales. This is the first systematic attempt thnt • has been made to investigate the subject. [Dr. Newsholme is a well known public health officer, for some time attached to the Local Government Board. The following shows the annual deathrate- of infanta per 1000 living at each age in the decade 1891-1900: — Under one year of age, 181.2; one to two years, 54.7; two to three, 20.3; three to four, 12.9, four to five, 9.3. High as the rate of mortality among infants under one year of age may appear, it may be noted that in most of the principal foreign countries of which statistics are available,- the rate of infantile mortality is as high or, indeed, higher than in England and Wales. In drawing this comparison, however, it has to be remembered that complete correction for differences of practice as regards the registration of births within the first days of life cannot be made.] SOUTH AFRICA AND AUSTRALIAN WINES.
