TWO CLEVER BOXER. ELLIOTT v. GODFREY.

FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH. ELLIOTT, THE WINNER. ' There was not a vacant seat in the Opera House last night, when the Wellington Boxing A&sociation concluded its season for 1908. The arrangements for tho tourney all worked out well, and the executive of the society, its, secretary (Mr. Coffey), and the various ringside officials aro deserving of congratulation upon the success which has ati tended .their efforts to foster tho art of boxing throughout the season. The principal event on last night's programme was a set-to between J. Godfrey, of Auckland, and W. J. Elliott, of ; Wellington, two , featherweights of proved ability. The exposition that resulted was scientific to a degree. Though there was plenty of hard hitting in it, and few beg pardons, it .was a clean set-to between two men who have rlcan spurt for their chiei object. Godfrey ! was beat-sn on points, and ho was the first man to congratulate the victor, and to wish him as long a tenure of championship honours as Godfrey himself had enjoyed. THE "PRELIMINARY BOUTS, j J. O'Donoghue (Wellington) and W. J. Smith (Petonc| boxed a four-round curtain-raiser. Thte Petone man scaled 9.04 to his opponent's 10.2^. There was plenty of vigour in the two opening rounds. Round 3 was equally divided between clinching and wild hitting. Smith weakened in the last r.iaul, and O'Donoghue received the referee's verdict. I. Kutner (Wellington) and W. Langridge (Petone)— B.o and 8.05 respectively — were the next pair. Langridge — a head taller than his opponent, and some inches longer in the arms — rushed Kutner in the first round and kept him continually on the defensive. KuAner's clever ducking saved him from trouble on several occasions in the next round, though Langridgo scored the most points. Kutner evened up matters somewhat in the third round J Tbs fourth was lively. "Kutner the winner," suid ihe referee. The crowd cheered. L. Porter (Wellington), scaling 9-0, met W. Shields (Manawatu), whose weight was B.IOJ. Porter delivered some effective uppercuts in the first two lounds, and he did most of the leading. Shields was a bit sluggish, but he got in two or three straight rights. The Palmerston representative became more animated in the nex>t round, and he' wiped off some of his debit. Both men were boxed to a standstill in round 4The referee's decision was given in Porter's favour.
