WHAT WATER IS WORTH IN EGYPT,

To develop Egypt as she can be developed, we require reservoirs capable of supplying annually 200,000 millions, or 200 milliards, of cubic feet of water. This would mean an additional discharge of 20,000 cubic feet per second in summer, and an increase to the renting value of Egypt of £6,000,000 per annum. This increase (says Engineering) would represent a capitalised value of £60,000,000. In other words, each milliard of cubic feet of water supplied to Egypt is worth £300,000.

What visions for the coming winter season are aroused by the following account of a dinner party, taken • from a French contemporary : — "The party was given by the well-known Comtesse PilletWill, and took place at her magnificent mansion " in the Rue Panquet. Eighty guests, the very cream of Parisian society, were present. When they sat down to table they were surprised to find one very familiar item missing — there were no menu cards. But a surprise was coming. In the centre of the table was a decoration of gilt, which measured about a yard square, and over which trailed sprays of delicious roses. Just as dinner was about to commence a signal was given by the Comte de zan, and the rose-laden grill gradually opened^ causing a shower of petals, and in their midst was seen a more beautiful rose than any — Marguerite Deval — the daintiest and most popular music hall artiste in Paris."
