Mr. Boetham was personally one of the most popular mon in tho House, and he was thoroughly " straight" politically. As a consistent freetrader he was muoh opposed to the action of &ir Harry Atkinson in introducing a protective tariff, but he nevertheless, on general grounds, remained loyal to that leader. This was the more oreditable, as Mr. Beetham was passed over when the Cabinet was chosen, although he had every right to expeot the offer of a seat. He was always attentive to his Parliamentary duties when in the oolony, and was a thoroughly good member for Wellington generally. The complete returns for Waitotara are— Hutchison, 953; Bruce, 931. Universal regret is expressed throughout the colony at Sir Manrioe O'Eorke's defeat, ' and an oqnally general opinion prevails that he Bhonld at once be called to the Legislative Council. |Br Tklkokaph.J (unitxd pbkBB association. ) Gbxtmodth, This Dat.
